Gillette

Grandpa switched on the new television, returned to the couch and covered himself with newspapers. I sat on the floor with my back to the couch. As we were making ourselves comfortable, the jingle "Gillette Blue Blades Presents Boxing" caught our attention. After a short period, I became restless and fidgety at which point grandpa gave me his pocket watch telling me to time the rounds. When the fight was over, the "set" was turned off. I did not realize it at the time, but a moment in history had come and gone. It was still more interesting exploring the farm or the nearby forest than watching television until the day it rained. Helen Trent was over, so out of boredom I turned on the television. A program appeared . . . fooling around with the knobs I flicked the dial and another program appeared ... I flicked again and again, not every channel had a program. When the television was first brought into the house, it was never explained to me there were other channels. I finally stopped switching channels, choosing a program featuring a wooden puppet wearing a cowboy hat. As I sat mesmerized, the image of squirrels scampering around or the mystery of the sun through the trees and the sound of wind ruffling the leaves faded from my mind replaced by the seductive cheers from the peanut gallery.
